Street Hockey Family Portraits

Posted on November 27, 2009  | 6 Comments

So, are you all wondering what yesterday’s blog post was all about? Me, too…I guess the bottom line is I’m currently working some stuff out and I would love to hear from my loyal blog readers what you would love to see on the blog…more pictures? photography tips? more about me :) drop a note in comments or send me an email because I would love to hear from you!!

My hockey family session…how Canadian am I??? I’ve been wanting to do this for awhile, but had to find the right family to do it with. I couldn’t have asked for a better family!!! These generous souls bought my gift certificate at a silent auction benefitting Epilepsy here in Okotoks. I doubt they knew what they were getting into-hahahaha-but I do know that they are getting a custom coffee table book with their disc of images as the book is the BEST way to showcase these images. Here’s a brief look at some of their more ‘formal’ family portraits(I use the term formal rather loosely as I don’t think that there is much that is formal about my work-hahaha).

I love these hockey images because here’s the thing…the little jabs at each other, the hugs of encouragement, the celebrating together and the laughing….ooooooohhhhh the laughing. This is what a family is to me…

You can see other images from this session here and here. Happy Friday ;) Go play with your kids!!!

The initial spark that drew me to your work was your blog. Your photography skills are so beautifully displayed through collages of your sessions, and the icing on top is how you share your thoughts about the experience of working with families. Your artistry shines through! Your photography captures joy, emotion, the fullness of life. When you add your own thoughts and reflections, it completes the picture. So… I would want to read more about you. More about what you are/were thinking when you took photos. Perhaps why it is a certain photo speaks to you. I also love your musical taste :) Thanks for a few new songs on my iTunes list.

Thanks Jillian :) I thought I would tell you what drew me to some of these images…the first black and white of the son, his mom told me he would be difficult to capture and she said that when she looks at this image she really sees him. Funny thing, I almost didn’t edit it…for no other reason, but that there were lots of him already, but something made me do it. Good thing. I LOVE WHEN PARENTS SAY THIS!!! I love the picture where the mom is pulling her husband in for a kiss as it was done with such tenderness that it made my heart melt at the moment. I love the wide angle quirkiness of the first hockey image. I love the dog walking into the frame of that one where he has the ball in his mouth…and the one where the mom is giving her son a big boy hug…the next frame you see that he is complaining about a splinter in his hand and she is helping him evaluate it(I didn’t show this one, I decided to pick one or the other).

Music…check. Today, I am listening to K-Os–love his obvious Micheal Jackson influence. :) ‘The Man I Used to Be’ on repeat. I always listen on repeat. I’m that kind of crazy ;)

Love it! This family is very, very confused though. There is only one color that should be worn in Calgary and that’s the red and black! Looks like the ladies in this family, are the ones who knows best.
